    Abaqus V6.9 is out...

For all of you Abaqus user's out there, Simulia has released a new version of Abaqus: V6.9. I am happy to announce that this version works just fine on the latest version of Ubuntu and Kubuntu 9.04.

The new version V6.9 contains a number of enhancements to the pre- and post-processor (CAE) and support for the extended finite element method (XFEM) among other things. The XFEM feature seems particularly cool to me since it allows for simulation of crack growth along arbitrary paths.

I would be curious to hear your experience with this and the other new features.

Overall the new version works just fine. I am somewhat disappointed, however, that Abaqus/CAE still does not work with the 3D visual effects that are typically used in Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I cannot really complain since Ubuntu is not an officially supported Linux distribution for Abaqus (even though Ubuntu is by far the most popular Linux distribution).

For the record, CAE works just fine if I disable the 3D visual effects. I would be delighted to hear if anyone has figured out a way to solve this problem without disabling the visual effects...
