How do Abaqus calculate charachteristic element length of solid elements

Does anyone know how Abaqus calculates the characteristic element length of solid (3-dimensional) elements?

I have not managed to find the definition in the Abaqus documentation. Is there a known formula?

It is easy to guess how they might do it, but I don't know the actual formula that is used

If you really want to know you might want to try reverse engineer the formula by running a set of FE simulations with different element shapes and printing out the characteristic length values reported by Abaqus.
