    Quadcore CPU

    Hi
    Dear Friends,

Since my computation times are sometimes really annoying , I've recently considered to buy a quadcore cpu and increase my RAM. Currently I have a single core 3 Ghz desktop and a dell dual core 2.5.

All that I do when I run the jobs is to allocate 100% of memory for preprocessor and analysis and also check the multiple processors box with a number of two cpus.

I have not installed any special code or things on my laptop and I'm not familiar with concepts of 'Threads /MPI/parallel computing etc.' but still the dual core's runtime is much shorter than the desktop with single core.

My question is that, if I buy a quad core cpu , should I do semi complex configurations like MPI and stuffs like that or I can simply benefit its power with just allocating maximum memory and check multiple cpu box with number 4?

    I highly appreciate your suggestions
    Yours Sincerely

What computer OS are you using: Linux or Windows?

For Linux things work out of the box, for Windows I believe you need to download a HP MPI library from the Abaqus support website.

    Thanks Dr. Jorgen,

    I use XP Pro. 32b.
There are two options for me, use a single quad CPU or two of them in parallel on a single system if it is of any help.

With regard to your post, it seems that even for a single quad CPU i need to install MPI codes.

I will give it a try,
    Thanks a lot,
    Yours Sincerely,
