Hello there,

I was thinking about the Infinitesimal and Green Lagrange strain tensor.
Generally knowing the first is not sufficient to determine the second one, but it looks to me that is possible if the deformation gradient is symmetric.

In this case the ij element of the infinitesimal is the sum of two equal terms du1/dx2 and du2/dx1, which can therefore be determined.

Is there any gross mistake in all this?

Thanks to everybody.

Strain tensors can be expressed either in terms of the reference configuration or the current (spatial configuration). Unfortunately, people use the term "Green Lagrange Strain", for both configurations. Hence, your question is not well defined.

However, I would agree that if the deformation gradient is symmetrical then you should be able to convert between the two strain measures.
