Hi,

I have a 2D model in ABAQUS and am using the Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic model. I apply a simple shear displacement to the top of the model and I should observe the Pyonting effect (normal stress for simple shear displacement) for large strains (greater than ~10%). My analytical expressions predict this should happen, but my ABAQUS simulation results do not match my analytical results!!
I am using a plane stress model.

When I use the plane strain model, I DO NOT observe the Pyonting effect...and my analytical expressions match the simulation results from ABAQUS. In the Plane strain model in ABAQUS I choose hybrid meshes...this option is not available for plane stress.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be doing incorrectly or has experience with simulating simple shear in ABAQUS??

Thanks,
Sarthak

hi -
i was able to match the analytical versus abaqus results.

I don't remember this stuff very well, but are you using large strain kinematics (NLGEOM)?...
