ABAQUS SYMMETRIC MODEL GENERATION

Hello
I have created a symmetric 2D model and want to use the "SYMMETRIC MODEL GENERATION" to transfer is to 3D model,I read all the documentation but I can't do it yet.
the problem is that , this option is not supported in a model defined in terms of assembly of instances or parts.I also heard that I should create a *.res file ( restart file ) to begin with but I don't know about the rest.
I am using ABAQUS/CAE version 6.5-3 on Windows XP

Hi

Symmetric Model Generation is not supported by ABAQUS/CAE. Instead you must include it in an .inp file (job file) directly. You must first create a 2D model and run it (Datacheck is enough). Then create a 3D job using appropriate commands (by a text editor) and run it in which the previously created 2D job should be emplyed as oldjob. There are very useful examples in ABAQUS documentations on this matter. Please contact me (M.H.R.Ghoreishy@ippi.ac.ir) if you need more help. Here in our institute we have ABAQUS and carried out many projects on Tire Simulations using this code.

Three years passed but I am now in the same situation of the previous guy. I am not able to work with the ABAQUS example 3.1.1.1 of the Abaqus example problems manual.

I create one input file selecting the data from the different .inp file contained into the manual but I am not able to pass from a 2d to a 3d analysis. The reply talks about jobs but I didn t use them for the analysis because I use to import a .inp file as a model and then I create a job to be runned!

Is there someone who can help me solvin this problem? I am wasting a lot of time trying to resolve it without good result:frown:.THANKS

The Example 3.1.1.1 seems to be right on. What problems are you running into when going through that example?

I've problems with this example too. The first part tiretransfer_axi_half.inp and tiretransfer_symetric.inp where running without problems on Windows XP. tiretransfer_full.inp is not running?!

Error Message is: Unknown
assembly node set ROAD

***ERROR: NODE SET ROAD HAS NOT BEEN DEFINED

On Vista even tiretransfer_axi_half.inp is not running.

Error Message says there would be no step definition. Which is not true as I'm using the same *.inp on xp and vista.

I insert each file as a model...Is it correct?
I am worried it is wrong because I can obtain the simmetry!

There must be a problem in the way I use in order to insert the inp file inside the program... Abaqus suggest to import the inp file as an abaqus fetch but I am not good in...It is a lot of time that I am matching with it!!!Please help!!!

Hi mirelala,

I'm sorry, I'don't understand you. My English is not the best.

What I was doing is:

a) reseved the *.inp files from a friend, but he said you can find it in the documentation of Abaqus (I'm sure you did, because that is focus of your question)
b) I started comandwindow, changed in the directory with the files
c) then I startet the analysis by typing abaqus job=tiretransfer_axi_half
then press "enter"
d) è voila: today the files worked even on vista. Don't know why they worked today, but yesterday failed. But now they are working! :oops:
e) then you can start (If you want to) the ABAQUS CAE and watch the results by opening the Outputdatabase *.odb

As far as I know you can't start these files from ABAQUS CAE directly because they are using the *SYMMETRIC RESULTS TRANSFER option, which is not running within CAE.

Should I put the file in a particular folder? Where is the command window you are talking about?

I tried to write that sentence in ABAQUS COMMAND but the program said to me that the Abaqus installation is incomplete...Do you know if there is another way to work with?

I solved part of the problem... I am know able to work with abaqus command but... I still don t understand how can I obtain the final model because it is made by more than one input file....Please help me!!!

thanks for your suggestion I was at the end able to work with ABAQUS COMMAND. I have run everything and my result are plotted in term of deformation and I would like to have this plotted in terms of stresses. How can I do? Thanks

I am not quite following your question. Are you trying to plot contours of stress? Are you using Abaqus/CAE? If not, you should.

hi everyone,

i read the post by mirelala, well am facing the same kind of a problem. i am conducting a thermal analysis on the disc brake assembly, i have already completed my simulation of braking and cooling of the disc in ABAQUS, but now am facing a major problem and that is transffering the temperature plots of the 2D results to the 3D model.
i created a 3D model of the disc brake and reading some of the things in the abaqus documents i tried to transfer the results using the restart option in the model tree. the problem is my temperature plots which i define as the predefined filed, are just getting applied to the 2D section which i have revolved to make a 3D model. i am very sure am missing out on something important in the process.

is there something am doing wrong i mean while buliding up the 3D model or during specifing the predefined field.
i would be really great full if someone gives me step by step process.

i really thank you from the bottom of the heart for your help.
