View Full Version : Ogden
Can anyone provide a source for Ogden constants I will need for an FEA analysis. Eventually I will have to measure my own, but for the time being it would help in setting up and debugging the FEA model. The material I will be using is Neoprene (chloroprene) rubber. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
Best Regards,
MechE
Hello MechE,
Material data and a comparison of different models for Neoprene is available on the Mechanics and Materials Section (http://www.polymerfem.com/modules.php?name=Materials_Models&material=6).
Suitable material parameters for the Ogden model are:
mu0 = 0.021 MPa
alpha0 = 0.045
D0 = 0.01 /MPa
mu1 = 0.222 MPa
alpha1 = -1.133
D1 = 0.01 /MPa
mu2 = 0.014 MPa
alpha2 = 2.294
D2 = 0.01 /MPa
These parameters are in the format used by ABAQUS.

Dr. Jorgen,
What would be an appropriate hardness range (Shore A) for this particular material representation?
Also, I'm looking for reference with a step by step calculation for material model parameters.
Thanks for your excellent web site!
Mark
Hello Mark,
Unfortunately I did not measure the Shore A hardness of that material. The following thread (http://polymerfem.com/forums/showthread.php?t=779), however, discusses how to convert between shear modulus and shore A hardness.
The easiest way to determine the hyperelastic material parameters is to use your FE program. More FE codes these days have a built-in tool for that.
